Novelist and playwright Richard Engling is a founding member of the Chicago Writers Group, a member of the TallGrass Writers Guild and a frequent reader at Chicago's Twilight Tales reading series. Ghost Watch, a play by Richard Engling, was produced by the Chicago Actors Ensemble in 1987. He plays drums and percussion for improvisational theatre and spoken word performances as well as in the latin/jazz/blues quartet, Midnight Blue.

Richard holds a Masters of Arts in Creative Writing from Indiana University and majored in Theatre as an undergraduate at Northern Illinois University.
